FAQs on Abell Watchmakers Services:

  • Can you service my pocket watch, quartz watch, automatic wrist watch, etc.?

The short answer: yes. We work on all types, brands and levels of watches. The watch may be worth thousands or simply sentimental value; we have serviced them all in our independent, fully equipped workshop. This includes pocket watches, mechanical and quartz wrist watches and many, many others.

  • What about verge or fussee pocket watches?

In most cases we do not accept these types, as repair is rarely cost-effective for the customer.

  • Do you work on clocks?

We do not work on clocks; it is a different skill set and even requires different tools. We choose to concentrate our efforts on watches alone.
What sets Abell Watchmakers apart from the others?

Chris Abell is an independent, formally trained watchmaker. After years as a hobbyist, Chris pursued intensive, full-time training  to gain the detailed skills and knowledge to own a business and become a full-time watchmaker.

Realizing the “shortcut” way of attending classes of a few days and letting that suffice was not a way to become the skilled watchmaker he wanted to be, Chris instead devoted himself to years of education at an on-site watchmaking school (consistently earning a spotless 4.0 GPA) and earned a certificate in Horology.

As a watchmaking student, Chris was trained in professional techniques of repair, replacement, inspection and testing of internal parts, increasing the technicality and difficulty of training only when core techniques were mastered. Over time, the training moved from time-only watches, calendar, automatic winding watchers, timers, split-second chronometers, moonphase, triple-date chronographs as well as case refinishing, crystals and a special segment of training to cover quartz watch service and the repair of antique watches.

Over the years, Chris has worked on watches of a myriad of makes with a constellation of needs. Whether it’s a watch from the 1800s to now, a Rolex, Omega, Tag, Breitling or Patek, Abell Watchmakers has handled it. The number of pocket watches of all grades and origins that have been serviced at the AW workbench numbers into the thousands. Chris has a broad skill base and has serviced thousands of watches of direct customers and watches sent to him for repair by various watch retailers.

With the permission of the owners, Abell Watchmakers has added photos of interesting repair and maintenance jobs to this website. Please take a moment to look at the quality of the work. Also please note that as an independent watchmaker, Chris Abell can save the customer money by not passing the watch through a middle man. He also offers a variety of repair options, many cost-saving, to the customer.

Intensive, time-honored training, successful repair of thousands of watches and an unrelenting commitment to quality all speak to the reasons why to entrust Abell Watchmakers with your timepiece.
